Searching for his majesty, Haile Sellassie, Biography?
66Interested in Haile Selassie biography? I am fascinated by the king's freedom..
I am not writing or commenting on emperor Haile Selassie's biography here, but have an interesting point to discuss. Sure i will consider buying his majesty's autobiography when i have favorable time to read it through. So please read this article through and get my point. It will only take 5 minutes of your precious time.
I was a child when the emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, was deposed by the derg socialist party. I wanted to write this blog after i saw a rare video showing the king visiting cement factory in Dire Dawa, (Halile Selassie in Dire Dawa). This YouTube video shows the king doing unexpected visit to the factory. what i am fascinated about is not the visit, but how the king travels from place to place in the country. Though this hub is not all about Haile Selassie biography, i would say it directly relates to it.
I grew up in the socialist party's regime. I knew well about the current government too. When leaders in any troubled countries go from place to place we see them surrounded by heavy guards. I remember Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam coming to visit my home town, Dire Dawa. First you will see armed military personnel throughout the street he is going to pass. It is very scary to look in the eyes of these guards. They look like lions watching for a prey. when the time for the arrival of the president comes there will be a parade of motorbikes, then a military vehicle with artillery and soldiers, then a long parade of similar cars. The point they wanted to make was "You dare come close to the president and we will.....". The same is true for the current government leader. I wouldn't say protection is not necessary, but this kind of heavy armed guards' presence will scare the hell out of people. To the contrary emperor Haile Selassie was walking from place to place on foot. I can see how his majesty was free in his country where as leaders who came after him were like prisoners in their castles.
I don't know if Haile Selassie biography includes the threats and dangers to the emperor by then, but it is clear that he had much freedom among his people. There are many elderly people that praise the time of the emperor. I have heard some claiming receiving a dollar bill while he travels with his companions. The point is he used to walk from place to place, of course with some protection, in the country. I have some question that i would like my readers to answer. Will it ever be possible for another leader in Ethiopia to walk from place to place, not being surrounded by heavily armed vehicles, guards and plain cloth security officers? I wish i could see that in my lifetime. By the way i would like to say that i would never want to be in a position where i am not free to go and visit a friend, go to the movies, walk around in town, and be free.
I know some will say "Isn't this the condition of all leaders in many countries? I suppose so. They are not free. i would say that some religious leaders are not free either. I have witnessed the Ethiopian religious leader going around in town in a heavily guarded military personnel. come on! religious leader heavily guarded? Yeah, the Vatican may have an answer for that. Another question i would like to ask is; "Will a leader in Ethiopia ever be able to live in peace in a community after finishing his/her term in office? I doubt it is possible as to the two governments that came after emperor Haile Selassie.
I am more than happy if you get my point here. We all want to see a time where governments are changed without a blood shed in Ethiopia. Why should we kill and be killed for the world we are not living in forever? Why do we wish to be in a place where our basic rights of moving freely is taken away from us? I wouldn't dare be in this place, though i know it will provide me of much money and power. I prefer to have my freedom.
